Mashed Potatoes and Turnips

Keep your kids happy while you keep them healthy. Sneak a turnip into the mashed potatoes. While you're at it, make a mental note to start using plain yogurt more often in your recipes. It's the low-fat alternative to sour cream and creates that same creamy tartness in all your signature recipes. When you make this for your family, don't tell what's in it... just let them take a taste and then watch those eyes light up. Surprise... it's really, really good!

1. Peel and cut up into chunks:

1 turnip
8 red or Yukon Gold potatoes

2. Fill a pot with water, potatoes and turnips and boil until vegetables are tender and can be pierced with a fork (about 30-40 minutes).

3. Remove from stove, drain water, and mash thoroughly.

4. Add and mix in well:

3/4 cup plain yogurt
1/4 cup butter
2 pinches salt
1/2 cup cheddar cheese (shredded if possible)

5. Leave lumpy or blend smooth with a blender.

Serve with turkey, pork or chicken for a buttery, tart version of the usual mashed potatoes that's sure to be a hit with your man or lady.

Tip: for added vitamins, leave the skin on the potatoes. Just be sure to scrub well and remove those pesky eyes!

Serves: 3-5.
