Kitchen Gadgets: What Do You Love and What Can You Live Without?

Last year for Christmas, my wonderful man gave me a Krups cappuccino machine.  This thing steams milk and makes the most perfect espresso.  I adore it.  You'll never believe where he found it: the Salvation Army.  Yep, he bought it for a couple dollars brought it home, cleaned it up, put it in a pretty box and placed it under the tree.  I don't care one bit that it's not brand new from the store.  He's also found me a rototiller, a treadmill, and a food processor at the dump.  Bless his heart.

I can't live without my cappuccino/espresso machine.   I adore good coffee - darkly roasted, rich, well-prepared in small doses...there's nothing like it.  I also can't live without a good Henckels set of kitchen knives, freshly ground pepper, my Kitchen Aid mixer, and a salad spinner.

This gets me to thinking about the products I could live without...you know, all those things advertisers make me think I might need, but never use.  My microwave would be one of them.  Yes, I know, I am in the dark ages, but something about microwaves makes me uncomfortable.  I can't help it.  Here are a few more.

  • Electric knives - my mother always used one to carve Thanksgiving turkey.  I don't get it.  Is turkey that tough?

  • Electric can openers - I just don't get it.

  • Some Tupperware items - okay, Tupperware is great...but really how much does one family need?

  • Pasta salad mixes - you can buy them in the grocery store.  Seriously, how difficult is it to make one up on your own?

  • Oscar Mayer Lunchables - cheese, crackers, and a dessert - outrageously priced and so easy to make on your own.

  • Those plastic gadgets with holes in them to measure spaghetti - how hard is it to estimate how much spaghetti four people will eat?
