Healthy Recipe Makeovers

Does the thought of healthy eating make you feel like you have to give up your favorite recipes? This is not always the case. You may be able to put those recipes through a health makeover. Eating healthy is all about making small changes and this is easy to do with some of your tried and true recipes. Use these makeover tips with your favorite entrees, salads, and side dishes to add more health to your every day meals.

Make Substitutions

  • Use evaporated skim milk in place of cream

  • Saute with olive oil, wine, or broth instead of butter (9 times out of 10 this makes the recipe taste better than before)

  • Replace one-half or all of the white rice, pasta and flour with their whole grain counterparts.

Add Healthful Ingredients

  • Add barley to stews

  • Add cranberries or nuts to banana bread

  • Add sliced pears and pine nuts to a mixed green salad

  • Add berries to oatmeal or other cereals

  • Add spinach, mushrooms, and tomatoes to scrambled eggs- my favorite!

Serve Smaller Portions

  • Instead of serving an entire plate of macaroni 'n cheese or spaghetti, serve a smaller portion along with a salad and steamed veggies.

  • Or if you are having a meaty kind of meal, have 4 ounces of steak with one dollop of mashed potatoes and a large spoonful of snow peas with carrots and walnuts.

This allows you to eat more satisfying meals for much fewer calories and fat. Remember, it is all about moderation. You can still have some of your favorites unaltered, but just be mindful of how often you have them.
